The lists of soldiers present at different dates in Durango provides useful information for not only matching family migrations, but as the same name can are frequently spelled differently it allows for a month over month and year over year comparison of how the same names are spelled.

For example: Juan Goncalez Moritto and Juan Goncales Morrito and Juan Goncalez Morito. Same name, with slight spelling variations. This is frequently the case with Spanish / Mexican records and why you should never check the “Exact” box on a name when doing searches in Ancestry in these records.

It also helps find those who may be related to do further research on.

For example: Lieutenant Blas / Blaz Diaz Marroquin appears a number of times, but there is also a Francisco Diaz Marroquin, Ygnacio Diaz Marroquin and Juan Diaz Marroquin. As the latter two are in the 1674 list but not the earlier lists, they may be sons of Blas or Francisco and have come of age for military service.

    Book Series Update:

The first book in my genealogy series focused on families from the Sonora / San Miguel de Horcasitas region is already available, beginning with an in-depth study of the Arvizu family. More volumes are currently in the works, each built from the same rich Spanish and Mexican records that make this region so compelling for research.

If your roots trace back to Sonora or northern Mexico, or if you’re interested in well-documented frontier families, this series is just getting started, and there’s much more to come.
