Old Photographs and Family Research

Genealogy is so much more than names and dates. Exploring the time and location your ancestors lived adds richness to your family tree.

Here are images of the last two homes on 22nd Street in San Francisco – 1920 and 2023. Nearest cross street is Collingwood. The exact addresses are unclear, but based on the 2023 image, below, they should be 3938 and 3942 22nd Street.

    1920

Have you ever used the addresses from Census records to to find pictures of how the homes looked then and now?

In 1920 living at 3938 22nd Street is the family of John Connors, born in Massachusetts. In the home is his wife Margaret and 4 of their children: John Jr., Edward, Myrtle and Walter. John worked in Harbor Construction.

In 1920 living at 3942 22nd Street is the family of Lowig Phillips, born in Ohio. I the home is his wife Barbara and his 2 daughters Mildred and Marion. Lowig was a bottle maker at Glass Works.

This location in San Francisco is a great example. The basic shapes of the houses remain, there are obviously more homes crammed in around the originals and due to the construction and parking the image is much much closer for 2023 image.

Couldn’t catch it well in the picture but there are still stairs in 2023, just nice concrete ones rather than rickety wooden ones. And the lion at the bottom of the stairs is an obvious addition, probably along with the improved stairs and railing.
