The first book of the new Series exploring the families of San Miguel de Horcasitas, Sonora, Mexico, has officially been released. Available on Amazon.

Arvizu of San Miguel de Horcasitas

Arvizu of San Miguel de Horcasitas traces the lineage and legacy of the Arvizu families who helped shape the early history of Sonora, Mexico. Centered on the descendants living in or near San Miguel de Horcasitas at the time of the presidio’s founding, this book follows the family lines of Domingo Arvizu and his wife Maria Angela Trejo / Trexo who were part of the Juan Bautista de Anza expedition, Juan de Dios Arvizu and his wife Maria Brigida Villela, Joseph Savino Arvizu and his wife Gregoria Lopez de Geres, Francisco Xavier Arvizu and his wife Maria Josefa Cordova, Alexandra Arvizu and her husband Juan Joseph Moraga, Jose Eugenio Arvizu and his wife Maria Joaquina Lopez, and six different men all in Horcasitas at roughly the same time by the name of Joseph Antonio Arvizu and their respective wives: Maria Ygnacia Lopez de Geres, Juana Maria Loretta Molina, Maria Narcisa Gimenes, Noriega Zacatecas, Ygnacia Martines and Maria Barbara Gertrudis Contreras.

The book also covers what is found in the records relating to the Arvizu surname in the Fronteras of Sonora prior to the founding of the San Miguel de Horcasitas presidio. One of the earliest documented men is Juan de Arvizu, he is married to Maria de la Higuera / Yguera. They have five documented children: Juan Joseph Arvizu, Ygnacio Gavino Arvizu (baptized 1704), Maria Margarita Arvizu (2nd marriage 1732), Joseph Gavino Arvizu (baptized 1705), and Rosa Arvizu (married 1715). In 1726, Juan de Arvizu is documented as having “many children and grandchildren.” Juan de Arvizu is one of five Basque men who sign a letter in 1720 on behalf of the citizens of the Fronteras. The book provides circumstantial evidence connecting the family of Juan de Arvizu to those residing in San Miguel de Horcasitas.

Future books in the series include: Fontes, Bojorquez, Valdez, Montijo, Lopez and Tapia.
