Fans of Yellowstone finally have a more complete picture of the Dutton family tree after the final episode of season 2 of the 1923 spinoff. If you’re a fan and haven’t watched the final episode this is your spoiler alert.
The big question that remained after the end of the first season was who would be the parents of John Dutton Sr, father for John Dutton Jr and grandfather to Lee, Beth, Kayce and Jamie? There were two candidates at the time, and season 2 kept the suspense going as both Jack Dutton and his wife Elizabeth are found to be expecting as are Spencer Dutton and his wife Alex.
It is at the end of the season that the answer to who is John Dutton Sr. is provided. Baby John Dutton is born in the final episode to Spencer Dutton and is wife Alex. John is born early and not initially expected to survive. Alex has passed away due to complications of frostbite by the next morning. The audience learns that Spencer Dutton never remarries and spends his life loving and missing his wife Alex.
Another twist at the end of the season is the murder of Jack Dutton. After Jack is murdered his wife Elizabeth chooses to return to her family in Boston. No additional information is provided on what happens to Elizabeth, or if the Dutton she is carrying is a boy or a girl. It would be interesting if a descendant of this unknown Dutton re-appeared in the future years on the Yellowstone Ranch.
This leaves three unaccounted for Duttons in the family cemetery. Perhaps they were just additional graves to fill space or will ever be explained remains to be seen. The three are Patience Dutton born 1931, perhaps she is the spouse of John Dutton Sr. Patience is born at the right time to be his wife and we know Spencer Dutton had no further children and even if the child born to Elizabeth is a girl she would be born later in 1924 not in 1931. The second is Ned Dutton with a birth year of 1863 and the third is Chance Dutton whom neither a birth date nor a death date can be seen on the headstone.
